About Naturism

"When I was living in France, sunbathing topless
in your yard, or at the park was okay.

Women go topless at the beach, but tended not to do so
at public pools. Up until this year, it was illegal
for women in Canada to go bare-breasted.

I think that is unfair!"

A Feeling of Trust and Comfort

Janet, a mother of two toddlers and a member of the Forest City Family Naturists (FCFN) in London, Canada says,

"I think naturism has become important in my life for several reasons. It is an incredible social equalizer. When a group of naturists meet, there are no social barriers. Each person is there with no artifice or pretense. I can meet people as individuals, not as a social position."

"I find that being in a group of naturists, there is a bond of openness and vulnerability. The common consent to protect each other forms an incredible caring community. My children are loved and protected by this extended family, making naturist events a fantastic way of getting a break as a family. I also find it extremely ironic that I feel more safe and comfortable when I am nude for it is the social situations that are clothed where I often feel threatened or exposed."

"Trust is an exceptional gift for people to give each other and naturists understand this. Friendships are made with a foundation of trust and shared respect that is rare in our society."

Nudism is Normal

A survey commissioned by the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) in 1999 determined that 2.7 million Canadians have a naturist/nudist mindset because they either visit or are willing to visit clothing-optional beaches or naturist clubs and resorts. A further 3.5 million Canadians are considered to have naturist tendencies because they are comfortable with skinny-dipping in mixed company.

Social and Gender Equality

The following comments were made by female callers to a discussion on topless equality on Radio Noon, a CBC Radio talk show (1997):

"I think any woman who has been out in the hot sun, gardening or doing whatever has said, 'God, I wish I could take my top off' · there's a lot of women who have said that."

"I find myself wanting to have my daughter have the experience of being in a place where she can really feel free about her body."
