Toronto group denied permit to march topless

August 25, 2011

by Gilbert Ndikubwayezu

The City of Toronto has denied a group of women permission to bare their breasts and hold a demonstration in a public park. But the women are determined to at least march at the park’s edge.

GoTopless, a U.S.-based organization, plans to hold its first Canadian protest at Ashbridge’s Bay Park this Sunday. Similar annual events have occurred in cities such as Chicago, New York and Miami.

Topless activists march through streets — but avoid the park

August 29, 2011

by Valerie Hauch

Pop-eyed pubescent boys skateboarding, families out strolling and people lunching on patios on Queen St. E. near Woodbine Ave. all got an unexpected eyeful on Sunday as dozens of men in bras and red bikini tops and bare-breasted women of all ages, shapes and sizes marched by just after noon.

Flanked by Toronto police on bikes and led by a car pulling a U-Haul trailer and poster proclaiming “Equal Topless Rights for All or None,” the group danced, sang and jiggled their way up Woodbine from Lake Shore Blvd. E., going east on Queen and south on Lee Ave., ending in an area bordering Kew Gardens. But they did not set foot in the public park.

Staying abreast of free speech

September 3, 2011

The women’s topfree protest in Toronto on Sunday had the right idea but the wrong result. The protesters were denied a permit to use a park because a park bureaucrat thought the women would not be “properly attired.”

But as the Star noted, barebreasted women have been allowed in public since a court ruling in 1996. Whether or not the women needed a permit, Toronto’s Department of Parks, Forestry, and Recreation seems to have considered itself above the law in denying the women their right.
